Has someone close to you died?
When someone you care for dies, it is very difficult. There’s no right or wrong way to feel, but it’s natural to have strong reactions.
People can feel scared, confused, numb, or out of control. You might even feel like you’ll never feel OK again.
How can I deal with this?
These feelings will change over time– it’s really tough, but certain things can help you cope.
- Try to talk to your family and other adults in your life, however difficult this may feel
- Do something practical like creating a memory box with photos and keepsakes that reminds you of the person who has died
- Try to stay active, spend time with friends and keep to your normal routine as much as possible.
Who can I talk to?
Talk to someone you trust. Even if they’re grieving too, it could help them to share their feelings.
- Child Bereavement UK Leeds offer support to children and young people when someone important to you has died or is not expected to live. Support can be just for you, or with your parents/family. There are also groups you can join. Call the helpline on 08000 288840 to talk to someone and find out about face to face support in Leeds.
- Young people aged 11-19 years old can also go to the Bereavement Support Service at The Market Place in Leeds city centre to talk about what has happened. You can also use drawing and painting to share your feelings and do activities such as making memory jars or books.
- Leeds Suicide Bereavement (Leeds Mind) can support children and young people who have been affected by suicide. Support can be accessed as an individual, working with a suicide bereavement practitioner who has lived experience of loss by suicide. Through six one-hour sessions, you’ll have the space to talk and explore your feelings, as well as getting practical support. Children and young people can also access support with their family. Remember, people don’t ‘get over’ their grief, but over time and with support from others, you will hopefully learn to live with the grief and get back to some kind of normal life.
