Are you a young adult carer?
Young adult carers may be caring for a family member or someone else who needs their help on a regular basis. You can find out more about what young carers do from Carers Trust.
Looking after your own well-being
At times, you may feel that you are struggling with being a carer and that it is affecting your own mental health. Separate from your role as a carer, you have your own life to think about which is just as important. You may have a disability or health issues of your own to manage alongside this. Everyone struggles at times and it is not a sign of weakness. Check out the range of services in Leeds that can support with your mental health.
It can be difficult to stay motivated as a young adult carer and to provide support for the person you are caring for. If you are caring for a family member for 35 hours a week or more than you may be entitled to Carer’s Allowance.
Are you moving away from home for the first time?
You may be considering living independently, moving away to study or renting a place with your friends. This can be difficult for young adult carers as they will probably worry about the person they are caring for, and may need to put other caring support in place or travel back home to provide support.
Are you trying to manage your studies alongside your caring role?
You may be balancing your caring role alongside a part time job as well as attending college or University, but there is support on offer to students in Leeds. It may also be useful to tell your college or University that you are a young adult carer, with some help starting conversations. However, it is your decision as to whether you want to tell them. You may also be eligible for Carer’s Allowance whilst you are studying alongside your caring role.
What is it like being a young adult carer?
“Being a young adult carer you don’t really have time to think about yourself. Your focus is on the person you care for and your mental health gets put to the side. You have to be strong for the both of you”
“As a young adult carer I’d like people to know that not every carer is the same and each will have different responsibilities and different degrees of caring. We are all just trying to live our life to the best of our ability whilst having caring responsibilities. We are not defined by our caring role but that’s not to say we are ashamed of them”
“Being a young adult carer isn’t always spending 24/7 looking after someone and can range from doing small jobs around the house to helping someone with all of their everyday activities e.g. helping them get dressed and to go to the toilet”
“Being a young adult carer can be emotionally and physically exhausting. It’s hard not to worry and sometimes you just have to drop everything there and then”
“Sometimes it is difficult to get a good nights’ sleep due to worrying or being woken up by the people you care for because they are not well”
“It is hard to explain what’s going on most of the time”
